Although its gameplay is fast-paced and enjoyable, at times the vehicle feel too light after crashes; some weapons (grenade launchers and chainsaws) lack power; its garage can only fit four vehicles at one time which makes upgrading existing vehicles cumbersome and inconvenient.

Scrap Metal is an infuriating top-down racer packed with firepower. Although its controls are intuitive and straightforward, learning them takes some practice – and is often frustrating as its lack of basic features (such as more forgiving systems or vehicles that don’t explode upon contact with another object) prevents it from providing all the thrills promised.

As is typical for XBLA games, the campaign mode may be limited but online modes provide ample opportunity for multiplayer fun once missions have been completed. Exploring destructible environments is also great fun while different vehicle types should please car combat enthusiasts looking for something fresh.

All the vehicles in this game are beautifully modeled and animated, featuring impressive detail as well as eye-catching light/shadow effects. Sound effects are also impressively realistic; although its soundtrack may be rather sparse for such a massive title, it fits the genre seamlessly.
An XBLA Entry
Overall, Scrap Metal is an enjoyable XBLA entry that provides plenty of gameplay and enjoyment. With its simple controls and diverse roster of vehicles, arcade racing fans should find this title enjoyable; its online component offers another reason to come back after you complete campaigns. Perhaps with a few more additions it could become one of XBLA’s physics-defying sensations; unfortunately for now its flaws make the game less than ideal value for its asking price.

Scrap Metal, a top-down racer/car combat game from Slick Entertainment that dates back to 2008’s stylish platformer N+, features weapon-laden vehicles colliding with each other at breakneck speeds and massive explosions. We had the chance to play this gritty 3D experience on an Xbox 360 standard console; however, developers also provide 3D glasses (you’ll need some old school cardboard rims with one blue and one red lens in order to play 3D mode).

Scrap Metal’s outrageous setting transports us back in time, though its fast-paced gameplay may not offer as many content-rich racers we’ve seen recently. That being said, its selection of cars includes muscle cars with four machine guns and hover cars equipped with twin flamethrowers; not to mention its impressive selection of weapons and power-ups!

Scrap Metal offers multiple multiplayer modes in addition to its single-player campaign. Race against friends locally or via Xbox Live; up to eight players can compete simultaneously! You can even customize the in-game controls according to your driving style by turning assist features on or off, adjusting TCS, ABS, and ESP settings and customizing in-game controls as desired.
Car Models and Tracks
Graphically, Scrap Metal is solid – car models and tracks feature great levels of detail; explosions and weapon effects look terrific; gameplay runs smoothly even when destroying multiple cars at the same time; however, one major drawback lies with its use of 2D art for characters and bosses which seems plagiarised from cheap shovelware.
An Exciting Way to Enjoy Life
Scrap Metal is an engaging and entertaining way to while away the hours. While not quite up to par with classic car-combat games of 20 years ago, its 1,200 Microsoft Point price tag may seem steep but there’s still plenty of tyre-squealing pleasure available here despite cheesy cartoon graphics and rock music that may grate on some players over time – they don’t detract from its fast, enjoyable action though.
